Toni Elías leads the way on day two at Jerez

The Spanish rider sets the best Moto2 time of the day on Sunday, with Yonny Hernández and Kenny Noyes also inside the top three places on the timesheet.

On a day when rain and wind alternated with sun and good temperatures, the early afternoon and final minutes of the second session of day two of the official test at the Andalusian track produced the most notable times. The combined classification of the mixed session (from 10am to 3.50pm local time) and the Moto2 session (5pm to 6pm) saw Toni Elías set the best time of Sunday with a lap of 1’45.024. The Gresini Racing rider, who was second fastest on Saturday in the wet, was today quickest on the dry.

“I’m happy but we’re still not ready to begin the season yet,” said Elías. “The bad weather has limited us, but we have made a step up from Valencia. We were quick both in the dry today and wet yesterday, which is without a doubt a positive thing.”

Continually impressing throughout the pre-season is Colombian rider Yonny Hernández, and he was second fastest of the day at 0.504s off Elías’ time. The Blusens STX rider performed well at the first official test at Valencia last week, as well as the private test at Montmeló in mid-February.

Kenny Noyes (Jack&Jones by Antonio Banderas) returned to the top times at third overall following his 12th place on the timesheet on day one, and Alex de Angelis (Scot Racing) completed the top four. The San Marinese rider, who topped the times on day one, was 0.708s off his former team-mate Elías’ pace.

The Forward Racing team also continue to do well. At Valencia Claudio Corti made an impact, and on Sunday at Jerez it was the turn of Jules Cluzel, who finished fifth with his Italian team-mate sixth.

Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Moriwaki), Roberto Rolfo (Italtrans STR) and Shoya Tomizawa (Technomag-CIP) all came in under the 1’46” mark, and Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) finished off the top ten.

The Tech 3 team is delighted to unveil its rolling chassis that will form part of the French team’s prototype Moto2 machine, due to be raced in the new 4-stroke World Championship class in 2010.

The bike has been designed and built at the team’s French headquarters, with the expertise and experience of MotoGP chief engineer Guy Coulon and data specialist Nicolas Goyon heavily influential in the project.

The Tech 3 team will run a two-rider effort in the new Moto2 class, which will replace the current 250cc World Championship in 2010. Team boss Herve Poncharal is currently in negotiation with several riders, and details of the Tech 3 line-up will be confirmed in the near future.

Tech 3 plans to give its new Moto2 machine a first public viewing at the season’s final race in Valencia next month.
Herve Poncharal – Team Manager

“I am delighted to unveil the new Tech 3 Moto2 rolling chassis, which is part of an exciting new chapter in the history of our team. All of us at Tech 3 are incredibly excited about participating in the new Moto2 class, which gives us a fantastic opportunity to show off the technical ingenuity we possess in our team. Having spent several months in the design and production stage, we are now looking forward to seeing the bike on track in the near future. Competing in Moto2 as well as continuing to work with Yamaha and Monster in MotoGP next year means we can look forward to challenging on two fronts in 2010 with a great sense of anticipation and optimism.”

Melandri makes 2009 test debut with Hayate Racing

>> Saturday 7 March 2009

The very first rider out on track at the MotoGP Official Night Test at Qatar on Sunday evening was Marco Melandri, testing with the newly formed Hayate Racing Team.

Wasting no time whatsoever as the Qatar test commenced it was Marco Melandri who undertook Sunday evening’s first lap of the floodlit Losail International Circuit.

After a period of uncertainty and having missed the first test of the year at Sepang in February it was perhaps no surprise that Melandri would be the first out of his pit-box, notching up eight early laps before a surprise rain interruption.

Keen to get his 2009 preparations underway Melandri headed out onto the track on the Kawasaki ZX-RR under the watchful eye of Ichiro Yoda, the veteran Japanese engineer who will direct the newly formed Hayate Racing Team, for whom the Italian 26 year-old will be the sole rider.

Giving his very first thoughts on his initial 2009 outing Melandri commented on his return to the pit-box, “It was difficult getting used to being on a MotoGP bike again at first after a few months away, but the key thing is I am already feeling good on the Kawasaki.”

Assisting Melandri this season under the management of Yoda, the Hayate Racing Team Manager will be Andrea Dosoli, whilst Jasja Bos will undertake the role of Team Co-Ordinator.

Dosoli told motogp.com, “This is an important test for us in order to assess our potential. The chassis is completely new and so is the engine. The rain is not helping us early on, because we need to see exactly where we are as a team in normal conditions. It is improtant for us to have Marco on the bike as he is a talented rider who has great experience.”
