Toni Elías leads the way on day two at Jerez
The Spanish rider sets the best Moto2 time of the day on Sunday, with Yonny Hernández and Kenny Noyes also inside the top three places on the timesheet.
On a day when rain and wind alternated with sun and good temperatures, the early afternoon and final minutes of the second session of day two of the official test at the Andalusian track produced the most notable times. The combined classification of the mixed session (from 10am to 3.50pm local time) and the Moto2 session (5pm to 6pm) saw Toni Elías set the best time of Sunday with a lap of 1’45.024. The Gresini Racing rider, who was second fastest on Saturday in the wet, was today quickest on the dry.
“I’m happy but we’re still not ready to begin the season yet,” said Elías. “The bad weather has limited us, but we have made a step up from Valencia. We were quick both in the dry today and wet yesterday, which is without a doubt a positive thing.”
Continually impressing throughout the pre-season is Colombian rider Yonny Hernández, and he was second fastest of the day at 0.504s off Elías’ time. The Blusens STX rider performed well at the first official test at Valencia last week, as well as the private test at Montmeló in mid-February.
Kenny Noyes (Jack&Jones by Antonio Banderas) returned to the top times at third overall following his 12th place on the timesheet on day one, and Alex de Angelis (Scot Racing) completed the top four. The San Marinese rider, who topped the times on day one, was 0.708s off his former team-mate Elías’ pace.
The Forward Racing team also continue to do well. At Valencia Claudio Corti made an impact, and on Sunday at Jerez it was the turn of Jules Cluzel, who finished fifth with his Italian team-mate sixth.
Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Moriwaki), Roberto Rolfo (Italtrans STR) and Shoya Tomizawa (Technomag-CIP) all came in under the 1’46” mark, and Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) finished off the top ten.
